Nsejjere spurs referees

The Southern Region Referees Committee (SRRC) chairperson Alfred Chasowa hopes Nsejjere Sports and Casual Wear Limited’s sponsorship of the Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) will spur competition and raise officiating standards.

“Officiating games and knowing that teams were not fighting for much was demotivating and sometimes frustrating,” Chasowa said on the sidelines of the K10 million Nsejjere sponsorship launch at Chiwembe Technical Centre on Wednesday.

“We are happy for the league as we are partners. This will bring competition among referees. Handling games with little at stake was like officiating social games. Now, referees will prepare by reading the Laws of the Game and ensure professionalism,” Chasowa said.

In the recent past, referees had challenges in getting their game pay. But with Nsejjere giving the league some money for administration, it promises to be rosy.

Nsejjere country representative Jacob Chikoya said from the K10 million, Premier Division champions will receive K7.5 million broken down into K1.5 million cash prize, K1.5 million for two sets of home and away uniforms and K4.5 million worth of merchandise for resell. Second-placed team will pocket K750 000 and K500 000 for third place.

The SRFA sponsorship covers prize money and logistics for the remainder of the 2014/15 season. The package surpasses the Central Chipiku and Simama Northern region leagues’ sponsorships which are pegged at K6 million and K3 million respectively.
